Allahabad: Advocates of the Allahabad High Court here on Friday abstained from judicial work in protest
against last month`s lathicharge by police on a group of lawyers in Lucknow.

The lawyers, led by the president of the High Court Bar Association, Umesh Narain Sharma, staged a demonstration outside the court premises where they condemned the "brutal repression of the peaceful march of advocates in Lucknow".

"A demand will be raised before the state government for setting up a statutorily-constituted advocates` welfare fund on the lines of the neighbouring state of Bihar," Sharma said.

Last month lawyers, marching towards the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister`s residence to submit a memorandum of their demands, clashed with the police leading to brick batting and lathi charge in Hazratganj area in Lucknow.

The lawyers were demanding that a provision of Rs 100 crore should be made for their welfare in the state budget.

Tight security arrangements remained in place around the court premises though no untoward incident was reported so far.
