Lucknow: BJP state president Laxmikant Bajpai on Tuesday said the Barabanki incident was a shameful one which has exposed the reality of the Uttar Pradesh government's 1090 Women Powerline in the state.
"The Barabanki incident is a scar on the forehead of the Uttar Pradesh government and the Uttar Pradesh Police. It has shown the truth about the 1090 service of the UP police. When the police inspector and sub-inspector try to misbehave with a woman inside a police station and upon failing to do so, burn her alive, there is no significance of the 1090 service," Bajpai told a news agency.
The Akhilesh Yadav-led Uttar Pradesh government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the Barabanki incident, where a woman anganwadi worker was allegedly set on fire by two policemen in the state's Barabanki district.
The victim's son had earlier demanded justice for his mother, saying she would only rest in peace when the guilty are punished.
According to reports, the woman had gone to the police station to free her husband, who had been picked up for questioning. When she refused to bribe the policemen in order to release her husband, she was set ablaze.
