BJP, Cong slam UP govt

Lucknow: Opposition BJP on Friday charged the Akhilesh Yadav government in Uttar Pradesh, which completed 100 days in office, with failing on all fronts while Congress demanded toning up of law and order in the state.

BJP spokesman Rajendra Tewari alleged that the SP government has not only failed to take concrete steps to fight corruption, but has refused to probe irregularities in sale of sugar mills and "misuse" of funds on renovation of then Chief Minister Mayawati`s bungalow.

He accused the state government of toeing the Congress line especially on the issue of corruption and inflation.

He also said nothing had been done for the benefit of farmers and claimed that 12 of them have committed suicide in these 100 days.

Tewari also alleged that law and order was in a bad shape and people were facing power and water problems.

Congress spokesman Ram Kumar Bhargava said mere announcements would not redress problems related to power, water, corruption and inflation.

"More political will on the part of the chief minister is needed," he said.
Special emphasis was needed to improve law and order, he said.
