Lucknow: BJP on Friday sought the dismissal of
Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh in the wake of a "brutal"
lathicharge on agitating gram sewaks here, saying it shows the
autocratic manner in which it functions.
"After brutal lathicharge of gram sewaks, we demand
immediate dismissal of the Mayawati government", State BJP
President Surya Prakash Shahi told reporters.
The brutal manner in which the Gram Sewaks were assaulted
by police, forcing them to jump into the Gomti river was
reminiscent of the British era, Shahi said and also demanded
an inquiry into alleged firing on agitated protestors.
The police had yesterday resorted to lathicharge to
control a rampaging mob of gram sewaks, who allegedly indulged
in heavy brick batting and set a police outpost and vehicles
on fire in support of their demand for higher honorarium and
regularisation of service.
