BJP to hold protests against change in UP local body act

BJP`s unit in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday announced to stage demonstrations on February 21 against the Mayawati government`s move to amend the Local Bodies Act for indirect election of mayors and chairmen.

Lucknow: BJP`s unit in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday announced to stage demonstrations on February 21 against
the Mayawati government`s move to amend the Local Bodies Act
for indirect election of mayors and chairmen.

"The bill introduced by the government in the Assembly
is an attempt to grab posts of mayors and chairmen in urban
local bodies and the party has decided to organise
demonstrations against this on February 21," BJP spokesman
Satyadeo Singh told reporters here.

He alleged that the amendment would lead to dominance
of muscle and money power and encourage horse trading.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the party
leaders and office-bearers held today, Singh said.

"Discussions were also held on the party`s two-day
state executive meeting to be held in Moradabad from February
26," he said.

The BJP spokesman said two resolutions would be passed
during the executive meeting.

"The party has also decided to organise functions in
every village to celebrate its foundation day on April 6,"
Singh said.
