Allahabad: Hundreds of BJP activists on Tuesday blocked traffic on the national highway here protesting lathicharge on party legislators, who were on their way to meet the Governor of Uttar Pradesh.

The BJP members, led by former state minister Narendra Kumar Singh Gaur, gathered at the Shastri bridge across the Ganga, which forms a part of the Allahabad-Varanasi national highway, and raised slogans against the BSP government.

Police and the agitators had skirmishes with the security forces though there was report of any clash, police said, adding that the protestors dispersed after about an hour.

However, the demonstration caused a huge traffic jam in the area.

Earlier late last night, BJP workers had torn a poster of Chief Minister Mayawati and burnt her effigy in the city's Civil Lines area in protest against the lathicharge.

Yesterday more than 50 BJP activists were injured when they were lathicharged by police. The BJP workers were on their way towards Raj Bhawan in Lucknow to submit a memorandum against amendment in the Local Bodies Act.
