Kanpur: Death has not brought an end to the resolve of Captain Lakshmi Sehgal to serve the society, as the eyes donated by her will help two blind women see the world.
Captain Sehgal's cornea was today successfully transplanted into the eyes of 15-year-old Babli and Rampyari (55), leading city ophthalmologist Dr Mehmood Rehmani told PTI.
As per Captain Sehgal' s will, the cornea of her eyes was removed, whereas her body was donated to Ganesh Shanakar Vidyarthi Memorial Medical College for research.
Rampyari and Babli had no visibility in one eye and very poor visibility in the second, and both had waited for two years for cornea, said Rehmani, who removed and transplanted the cornea.
"After getting Captain Sehgal's cornea, I called up Babli's father Guddu who hails from Hardoi and is from a financially weak background and asked him to come to Kanpur for the transplant," Rehmani said.
Rampyari, the second person to benefit, belongs to Hatiya area of Kanpur.
"Both transplants were done today, and the result was satisfying," the doctor said adding, the bandage would be removed on July 30.
Sehgal was very active during the Independence movement and had commanded the 'Rani of Jhansi Regiment' of the INA formed by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.
A doctor by profession, 97-year-old Sehgal was working as a medical practitioner and a social worker.
She was awarded Padma Vibhushan in 1998.
Sehgal was admitted to the hospital on July 19 after she suffered a heart attack at her residence in Civil Lines area here. She was kept on life support system and passed away on July 23.
