Allahabad: Strongly opposing the Uttar
Pradesh government`s decision to hold "party-less" civic
polls, the Congress today declared that it would thwart any
attempt by Mayawati to scuttle former Prime Minister Rajiv
Gandhi`s dream of empowering civic bodies.
Led by UPCC president Rita Bahuguna Joshi, Congressmen
including city Mayor Chaudhary Jitendranath Singh and senior
leader Dharmaraj Singh Patel took part in the demonstration
where slogans were raised in protest against the proposed move
of the BSP government.
"Our agitation is part of a state-wide stir against the
sinister move of Mayawati government which is actually a
fall-out of the Chief Minister`s growing insecurity over her
dwindling popularity", Joshi said.
"We will oppose the move tooth and nail. We can not
allow Mayawati to scuttle the dream of our late leader and
former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi who had always stood for
decentralisation of administration and therefore advocated
greater empowerment of civic bodies", the UPCC chief added.
