Lucknow: Fearing threat to his life, a Congress leader, who had helped a Bareilly youth get bail after his arrest for posting comments against Uttar Pradesh minister Azam Khan, has knocked the doors of Raj Bhawan for security.
Congress party's Rampur district unit general secretary Faisal Khan Lala had helped the youth - Vickey - get bail and ever since he has allegedly been facing the wrath of Azam's supporters in Rampur.
"I had helped Vickey since no one in the city was ready to do so and since then, Azam Khan's supporters have been coming in groups to my house in Satoon Sang locality under Ganj police station area and raising slogans and using abusive language," Faisal told PTI.
"My family and I am under threat from his supporters. I met Governor Ram Naik earlier this week to seek security," he said.
Faisal said the media incharge of the minister, who had lodged the case against Vickey over Facebook comments, is himself an "accused in 307 cases" filed by him at the time of last Lok Sabha polls and the High Court has given clear orders to SP, Rampur to take action against him but to no avail.
"Such is the terror of Azam Khan in the district that none is ready to speak against him openly. Same is the case with my own partymen and leaders," Faisal claimed.
When contacted, Naik confirmed that he met Faisal and said that his complaint as well as a covering letter has been sent to the Chief Minister for his security.
"It is a serious issue. He told me that he faces life threat from a minister. I have written a letter to CM Akhilesh Yadav along with his memorandum to take necessary action as per law, including providing adequate security to the complainant," the Governor said.
Azam, however, could not be reached for his comments on the allegations levelled by Faisal.
