Lucknow: Accusing the Sangh Parivar of trying to spread communalism, Congress on Thursday said it wanted to divide the country on communal lines.
"The principles of Gandhiji are being challenged today and those doing so have the aim of dividing the country by spreading communalism," UPCC president Nirmal Khatri said while participating in Gandhi Smriti padyatra taken out by the party on the eve of Mahatma Gandhi's death anniversary.
"Gandhiji had preached about world brotherhood but today the Sangh Parivar wanted to divide the country," Khatri said.
Former UPCC chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi in her address said that US President Barack Obama visited India twice and on both the occasions he termed Gandhi as the inspiration of those fighting against inequality and injustice.
"Our Constitution is based on the principles of Gandhi and it is shameful that the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi wanted to change its format," she added.
