Ghaziabad: In a glaring faux pas, four
persons facing criminal charges have been appointed as special
police officers (SPOs) in Ghaziabad district for maintaining
peace before and after the Ayodhya title suit verdict later
this month.

Describing it as a "serious matter", Senior SP Raghubir
Lal today said, "No criminal will be allowed to work as SPO."
He directed his junior officers to check the background
of all persons before appointing them as SPOs.

The four SPOs facing various criminal charges have been
appointed in Loni, Hapur and Sihani Gate police station areas.

While one of them, a ward councillor in Loni
Municipality, was involved in a rape case, another was accused
of torching the car of Ghaziabad district magistrate in Hapur
in 2004.
