Dy SP murder: Wife demands second autopsy under CBI
Lucknow: With the mystery surrounding the death of Deputy Superintendent of Police Zia ul Haq deepening with every passing day, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday arrived in Pratapgarh district to meet the slain officer’s family.
The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister has been forced to come to Pratapgarh since Parveen Azad, widow of Haq, had earlier threatened that she would commit suicide if Akhilesh Yadav fails to visit her family.
Haq’s wife has demanded a second post-mortem under the CBI`s supervision to end contradictions in the police`s version.
"I know the police are working under strenuous conditions but there is every possibility of a deliberate mess-up or a careless mistake," Parveen was quoted as saying.
"In that case it would be better if the CBI seeks another post-mortem. We have no reservations on the issue," she added. Haq`s autopsy report had triggered a controversy when it said he was killed by a single gunshot caused by an undetermined firearm.
Speaking to reporters, Parveen, a medical student said, "There were three bullet wounds. Being a medical student, I know the difference in the nature of injuries caused by a bullet. I had my finger inside Zia`s wound to find out if it was deep or not," she said. "He had one bullet wound on each of his tibia (the shin bone) and a third on his abdomen which would have damaged his liver or lungs."
Haq’s widow also categorically rejected the post-mortem report, saying that her husband was shot three bullets. Alleging discrepancy in the post-mortem report, Parveen contradicted Additional Director General (ADG) Law and Order Arun Kumar’s statement that Haq was hit by one bullet from back.
Arun Kumar, while addressing a press conference yesterday said, “Experts are scanning the area for the bullet that pierced the chest of Deputy Superintendent of Police Zia ul Haq, they were yet to find it.”
Metal detectors and other techniques had been pressed into service at the site but so far no bullet has been found, he said.
“The bullet had pierced Haq`s body from the back, punctured his rib cage and exited through his chest on the right side. Other than this, the autopsy conducted by three local doctors and video-graphed, revealed several injuries on Haq`s body, suggesting that he had been beaten up by the mob and hit by an iron rod on his head,” he said.
He also refuting contradictions in the autopsy, saying there was no way that there could be divergent views on the autopsy as the whole post-mortem was conducted by a panel of doctors and was filmed.
However, Haq’s widow has expressed satisfaction with the state government ordering a CBI probe into her husband`s death and said she trusted Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav`s assurance that justice would be done to her.
"I am sure that the truth would now come out and peace would come to my husband`s soul once the killers are exposed and arrested," she added while noting that the state police in ordinary circumstances worked under tremendous political pressure.
The local police also yesterday stepped up the probe in its senior officer`s killing in Uttar Pradesh`s Pratapgarh district with a team of experts visiting the area where he was brutally assaulted by a mob and shot dead.
When quizzed about Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiya`s arrest, SP leader Ram Gopal said, "The decision regarding his arrest will be taken by the CBI, since the case has been referred to the agency."
He said the police usually call off their investigations if a case is referred to the CBI, particularly to avoid allegations of "tampering with the evidence" by the intelligence agency.
Haq’s killing was also raised in Parliament yesterday and issue saw the opposition parties demanding the immediate arrest of former minister Raja Bhaiyya, who is accused in the crime.
Haq was killed by an irate mob last Saturday leading to widespread anger in the state.
Parveen accused Raghuraj Pratap Singh aka Raja Bhaiyya, the local legislator, of being the key conspirator in the killing of her husband.
Following the controversy, Raja Bhaiyya stepped down as a cabinet minister.
Compensation of Rs.50 lakh and a job for a family member was also announced by the Samajwadi Party government, while three policemen who fled the scene of crime, exposing Haq to a hostile crowd, were also suspended and district police chief Anil Rai shifted out.
