New Delhi: The Election Commission is likely
to transfer Uttar Pradesh, which goes to assembly polls next
month, Director General of Police Brij Lal and Home Secretary
Fateh Bahadur following complaints against them from political

Leaders of various political parties met the visiting
EC team led by Chief Election Commissioner SY Quraishi and
the two Election Commissioners VS Sampath and HS Brahma
today and complained against the two officials that they were
partisan in their role.

Sources say the EC is likely to order their replacement

The Election Commission earlier in the day ordered that
all statues of Chief Minister Mayawati and her party
symbol--the elephant--installed at several places in Uttar
Pradesh be covered until the completion of Assembly poll

Justifying the action of covering all statues, a top EC
official said the action was consistent with the Commission`s
action of removing portraits and calenders from government
offices bearing photographs of the chief minister ahead of

The action was taken by the Election Commission during
its two-day visit for a comprehensive review of election-
preparedness in Uttar Pradesh which goes to polls in seven
phases between February 4 and February 28 to elect its 403-
member assembly.
