Kanpur: The first-year BTech student of IIT Kanpur, who allegedly committed suicide in his hostel room yesterday, may have taken the extreme step due to a failed love affair or home sickness, authorities of the premier institute said on Friday.

Mehtab Ahmed, a resident of Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh, was found hanging in his hostel room.

"Some love poems have been recovered from his room and we suspect that a failed love affair may be the reason for him to commit suicide. However, nothing can be said for certain as of now," IIT-K Director Sanjay Dhande said.

The 19-year-old, whose home town is 80 kms from here, used to be homesick and often visited there, he said.

A message that he was "tired of IIT" has also been found written on his room's wall, Dhande said.

To a question if Ahmed was driven to suicide because of ragging, Dhande said the boy was in constant touch with the the institution's counselling team and would have told them if he was facing any problem.

Meanwhile, Circle Officer of Kalyanpur police station Shailendra Lal said that it was not clear for whom the love poems were meant, or who the three persons addressed in his message were.

IIT-K has already constituted a four-member fact finding committee to probe the death.

This is the ninth such case of suicide in past six years.
