Kanpur: The Pollution Control Board on Thursday
lodged an FIR against a tannery owner after some of its
officials were allegedly taken hostage and roughed up by the
workers of the leather making unit.

A team of Pollution Control Board officials led by
regional officer Radheshyam on Wednesday had made a surprise visit to Sunrise tannery to check the level of pollution of
water from it but they were gheraoed by the unit workers, who
allegedly misbehaved with them.

"The officials were held hostage for three hours and only
after the intervention of police, they were released,"
Radheshyam said, adding that an FIR has been lodged against
the tannery owner Shakeel Azhar and other workers.

The tannery owner denied that the officials were roughed
up and taken hostage by his workers.

Azhar accused the officials of demanding for Rs 5 lakh
bribe from him in lieu of clearance certificate.

Additional District Magistrate (city) Shailendra Kumar
Singh said a probe would be initiated to investigate the
