Aligarh: Five students of the Aligarh Muslim University who were spearheading a campaign for the students` rights in the campus have been suspended, an official AMU notification said.
University Proctor Mohd Zubair Khan in a notice on Saturday said that these students were suspended and the campus declared "out of bounds for them for incidents of gross misconduct and indiscipline".
Mushtaq Ahmad, Mohd Ibraheem, Adeel Ahmad, Mohd Osama Shamsi and Syed Umar Ahmad Qadri has been suspended for "disturbing the private life of University officials", it said.
Meanwhile, a large group of students marched to the Proctor`s Office and presented a bouquet to register their protest against the decision.
Reacting to the suspension order, Mushtaaq Ahmed, spokesman of the agitating students said, "we have been suspended for indiscipline, several police cases have been filed against us by the University administration."
It was despite the fact that during the two-month long agitation not a single incident of violence had taken place in any part of the campus, he claimed.
"We now fear that attempt will be made to falsely implicate us in some case of violence to justify the suspension order," he said.
University authorities had reluctantly agreed to hold elections to the AMU Students Union only after pressure was applied on the Vice-Chancellor by Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibbal, he said.
The main demand of the student agitators pertains to the revival of the Students Union which had been defunct for more than four years and also holding elections for selecting student representatives to the University Court and Academic Council.
The University administration has only agreed to hold the elections to the Students Union while not conceding to the other major demand.
