Lucknow: The Uttar Pradeesh government on Tuesday suspended five policemen who accompanied former state minister Amarmani Tripathi, main convict in the Madhumita Shukla murder case, to his native place for alleged derelicition of duty.

The state government had ordered a probe yesterday into the reports that Tripathi had been missing from Varanasi jail since the past one-and-a-half-month without permission.

"Sub inspector Kuldeep Yadav, constables Amit Kumar, Bhim Shankar Gautam, Arun Kumar and Vashisht Narain who accompanied Tripathi from jail to his native place in Gorakhpur for the funeral of his mother on July 14 have been suspended for lapse in duty," UP Special DGP Brij Lal said.

He said Amarmani Tripathi has returned to the Varanasi jail yesterday.
