Gautam Buddha Nagar gets its first jail

More than 16 years after its creation in 1997, Gautam Buddha Nagar district on Wednesday got its own prison as the district jail here became operational.

Greater Noida: More than 16 years after its creation in 1997, Gautam Buddha Nagar district on Wednesday got its own prison as the district jail here became operational.

"Presently, two circles have been made operational. They have a capacity of over 2,600 prisoners. Third circle will be completed soon," said Deputy Jailer Rajinder Singh.

Over 1,700 prisoners of Gautam Budh Nagar are lodged in the Ghaziabad jail at Dasna. Around 70 of them were shifted to the new jail here today.
Situated in Luksar village, the jail is built on 36 hectares at an estimated cost of Rs 192 crore.

Once completed, it will have 35 barracks and will be able to lodge 3,550 prisoners.
It has a 80-bed hospital and video conference facility also. The jail also has 723 staff quarters.

District Magistrate A V Rajamouli yesterday visited the jail and gave clearance for its official opening.
