Get ready to face Congress challenge: Mayawati

New Delhi: Facing heat over land acquisition and alleged rape and murder of a teenager in a police station in Lakhimpur Kheri, UP Chief Minister Mayawati Thursday signalled to her party cadre here to get ready for a long-term agitation to counter the Congress offensive against her government.

Addressing her party cadres from Delhi at the Talkatora Indoor Stadium here, the BSP supremo alleged that while crimes are taking places in other states too, central bodies like the National Commission for Women and the National SC/ST Commission are only targeting her government, according to party sources.

Her address to the party workers also assumes significance as she had recently said that BSP will raise the issue in Parliament for bringing a uniform land acquisition policy on the lines of the one introduced by her government recently.

The BSP could organise a stir here during the monsoon session of Parliament, the sources said.

According to the new land acquisition policy announced by the UP government after the Bhatta-Parsaul violence, private players will have to directly acquire the land and the government will only act as a facilitator. Farmers will also be given 16 per cent of developed land.

In a bid to make inroads in other states, Mayawati had recently addressed similar workers' conferences in Chandigarh and Karnataka.

Party sources said by holding the meeting in Delhi, she also wants to activate the BSP cadre here ahead of the MCD elections due next year where the party wants to make its presence felt.
