Allahabad/Lucknow: In further
embarrassment for Mayawati Government, a teenaged girl has
told a court that a nephew of an UP minister was allegedly
trying to shield three youths who had gangraped her, a charge
denied by the state police and the minister.

The incident pertains to Handia police station area of
Allahabad district where an FIR was lodged on January 23 by
the family of the alleged rape victim, who is a student of
class XII at a local intermediate college, Inspector in-charge
of the police station B L Rawati told PTI.
He said the complainant had brought his daughter to
the police station claiming that the girl was a minor and that
she was "forcibly taken to Surat" in Gujarat by three youths
on January 19 where she was gangraped for four days.

In the FIR, one Alok Yadav, who studied in the same
college as the girl, and two unidentified persons were named
following which Yadav, the victim`s junior, was arrested and
sent to a remand home as he was less than 18 years of age.

Rawat also claimed that neither the girl nor her
parents had made "any mention of pressure being put on them
from any quarters to modify or withdraw their complaints".

However, while deposing before Additional Chief
Judicial Magistrate Chhaya Nain, the girl said "that she was
being pressured by a nephew of Minister for Higher Education
Rakesh Dhar Tripathi to withdraw her complaint", the girl`s
lawyer R S Ojha told reporters here.

Ojha said that the girl had also prayed for a fresh
medical test as the medical examination conducted under the
supervision of Mahila Thana had reportedly "failed to
establish that she was sexually assaulted".
He also claimed that his client was "only 16 years
old, as is evident from her high school records, though the
medical tests have stated her age to be 19 in order to conceal
the fact that the girl is a minor".

The court has ordered that the girl be made to
undergo a fresh medical test and the report be submitted on
Monday next.

In Lucknow, Special Director General of Police Brij
Lal denied that the Minister`s kin was involved in the
incident after reports alleged that the girl and the accused
were found at the minister`s house and gave his own version of
events.

He claimed that the girl was was missing from her
house in Ramaipur village and had fled alongwith her school
mate to Surat, only to return on January 23.

On her return, she had taken shelter in a temple in
Chaura Badera hamlet, adjacent to the house of a relative of
Minister Tripahti who also belongs to the same village.

The father and brother of the girl had also found her
in the temple and had informed the police, Brij Lal told
reporters, adding that her schoolmate was also arrested from
there.

"The reports of involvement of minister`s relative in
the case are wrong and the father of the girl has also made no
mention of either the minister or his nephew Sunil Tripathi
in this connection," he said, adding that they were awaiting
the report of medical examination.
The Minister`s Public Relations Officer Rudramani
Mishra, meanwhile, claimed that "no family member of the
minister is involved in the matter in any way".

"Contrary to what is being said, the minister does not
even have a house in the village where the girl was allegedly
asked to withdraw her complaints," Mishra said

He alleged "it is a conspiracy by political opponents
to tarnish the image of the minister who has been in public
life for over 40 years.

"We hope that the case will be investigated speedily
and the guilty will be brought to book at the earliest," he
said.

The incident comes hot on the heels of the Banda Rape
incident. On Janury 13, BSP MLA Purshottam Dwivedi was
arrested in Banda a month after he allegedly raped a
17-year-old dalit girl who was later implicated in a false
theft case.
Also, days after the UP Police gave a clean chit to
ruling BSP MLA Shiv Prasad Yadav, facing allegations of
colluding with a rape accused and implicating the victim in a
false case, a court in Etawah yesterday directed the police to
lodge an FIR against him and police officers.
