Allahabad: Concerned over alarming pollution
level in the Ganges river, the Allahabad High Court on Wednesday
asked Uttar Pradesh government to issue a notification banning
the use of polythene in the vicinity of the river.
Passing the order, a Division Bench comprising Justice
Ashok Bhushan and Justice Arun Tandon asked the government to
file an affidavit, apprising the court of the compliance of
the order, on October 25 next.
The order came in course of hearing on a Public Interest
Litigation which drew the court`s attention to the pollution
in the Ganges which has been declared as the national river by
the Prime Minister.
The court also expressed dissatisfaction over the various
measures adopted by the state government to control pollution
and noted that they have proved to be inadequate.
The court also ordered that the state`s Advocate General
remain present on the next date of hearing in the matter.
