Lucknow: Doctors at a government hospital here have expressed inability to treat a 14-year-old Kanpur boy suffering from aplastic anaemia, whose parents had approached court seeking permission to sell off their kidneys to fund his treatment, citing lack of facilities.
Anuj, a student of class VI, requires bone marrow transplant but his father, a scooter mechanic, cannot afford the medical expenses. Following media reports, the Uttar
Pradesh government yesterday deposited Rs 1.5 lakh with the Sanjay Gandhi PGI hospital and promised to give further financial support if required.
The civil court had yesterday asked central and state governments and the district magistrate to inform it about the progress of Anuj's treatment.
But doctors at Sanjay Gandhi PGI Hospital, where he has been admitted, say they do not have the required facilities and the boy should be taken to CMC Medical Hospital
Vellore.
"Anuj is in an advance stage of aplastic anaemia, which requires a bone marrow transplant. The survival chances are only 50 percent in such patients," Sonia Nityanand,
the Head of Haematology Department at PGI hospital, told a news agency.
The facility of bone marrow transplant is available at CMC Medical Hospital in Vellore, Tamil Nadu and the treatment would cost approx Rs 12 lakh, she said.
"Since the facility of Hippo filter room, that is required for the transplant is not available in the hospital, the treatment cannot be done here," Nityanand added.
Anuj's parents had brought him to the PGI hospital in December 2009. However, they were informed about the inability to treat him, she said.
Aplastic anemia is a condition where bone marrow does not produce sufficient new blood cells.
