Jaiswal`s remarks: Court asks admin to act on activist`s plea

Kanpur: A local court on Saturday asked the district administration here to take appropriate action on a plea of a woman activist, allegedly facing threat to her life for lodging a case against Union Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal.

The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate gave directions to District Magistrate and Deputy Inspector General of Police on an affidavit of Anita Dua, who claimed that she was given threat of dire consequences by Jaiswal`s supporters, if she did not take back her case against him, her lawyer Anand Jaiswal said here. Dua had on October 3 moved an application in the court to file a case under section 294 (obscene acts and songs) and 500 (punishment for defamation) of the IPC against Jaiswal. She filed another application yesterday saying she was given threats by some unidentified persons, who claimed to be Jaiswal`s supporters. "Following which she was directed by the court to submit an affidavit," the lawyer said. Today, on her plea, the court directed the administration to look into the matter and take appropriate action. Addressing a Kavi sammelan in Kanpur recently, when the news of India`s victory over Pakistan in a ICC World Twenty-20 match in Sri Lanka came in, Jaiswal had said, "Like an old victory, wives lose charm as time goes by." He, however, later claimed his comments were misconstrued and were being taken out of context and that he apologised if they have hurt the sentiments of women. PTI
