Kanpur: The brother of 22-year-old Himanshu Vishwakarma, who committed suicide in his hostel room, on Saturday said that her brother took the extreme step because he was ragged in college.

“My brother was certainly ragged in college, so he committed suicide,” Pradeep Vishwakarma reportedly said.

Himanshu was a student of mechanical engineering at Government Polytechnic College. He took the extreme step on September 3 after being ragged and beaten by his senior, the police had claimed.

While the investigation in the case is underway, preliminary findings suggest that Himanshu was depressed after his seniors ragged him on September 1 and later committed suicide.

An FIR has been lodged against two senior students - Karan and Vijay - as well as other unidentified students after a complaint was filed by the brother of the deceased.
