Land acquisition: Farmers to hold panchayat

Demanding adequate compensation for their land acquired in 1962 by the then Improvement Trust, farmers from 22 villages said they will on August 5 hold a dharna protesting against the Centre and the state government.

farmers from 22 villages said they will on August 5 hold a
dharna protesting against the Centre and the state government.

The farmers will hold a panchayat at the district
magistrate office campus area demanding compensation at the
current market price. The compensation was 48 paisa per square
yard when their land was acquired.

The farmers are from Rahispur, Sihani, Bamheta, Sadiq
Nagar, Pasonda, Maharaj Pur, Jhanda Pur, Raja Pur, Chhipyana,
Bhonja, Arthla among other villages.

Yesterday, farmers under the leadership of an old farmer
Sanjay Baba held a meeting here.

They said that in 1962 in Delhi, farmers had staged a
dharna and the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had
increased the rate by Rs 1 and total rate was Rs 1.48.
