Lakhimpur: As many as 33 Lekhpals
(revenue officials) were arrested on Sunday in connection with the
killing of two lawyers in Mohammadi tehsil in the district,
One more accused in the case was absconding, they said.
The two lawyers, who were killed, were cremated today
amid tight security. Adequate police were deployed in the area
where the situation was tense but under control.
Lawyers Pradip Dixit and Mukul Tewari were shot dead
yesterday after a group of Lekhpals allegedly opened fire at
them during a clash, police said.
Agitated over the killing, lawyers in Lakhimpur and
Gola went on a rampage damaging some 12 government vehicles
and ransacking the office of the District Magistrate.

firing which left two of their colleagues dead and four
An FIR in this connection was lodged in which 34
people, including 33 Lekhpals, were named as accused.
The lawyers and Lekhpals were at loggerheads for last
seven days over alleged extortion of money from the people by
Lekhpals, police said.
The lawyers were on strike for past one week demanding
the transfer of a Lekhpal while the revenue officials were
boycotting the work in support of their colleague.
