Muzaffarnagar: A man has been arrested here for allegedly posing as a Muslim to marry a woman from the community and then forcing her to change religion, police said on Tuesday.

A case has been registered against Azhar, said Sub-Inspector Pramod Pawar.

He said it has been alleged that Azhar married the woman posing as a Muslim. He then beat and sodomised her to force her to change religion, Pawar said.

He was arrested and send to jail yesterday, he said.

The couple got married on June 15, 2014.

Azhar, however, had denied the charges, saying that he had converted to Islam and is a Muslim.

He had said he was being "implicated" because of a property dispute.
