Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Police on Monday conducted raids at a house in Meerut in the wake of the arrest of a top Maoist leader in Bihar and seized Naxal literature
and other documents.
"The Bihar Police have arrested Maoist leader Varanasi Surbramanyam alias Srikant and requested their counterparts in UP to cooperate in the investigations," state Special Director General of Police Brij Lal told reporters here.
The arrested Maoist and his wife had their base in the national capital but had left their house in Rohini when their activities came under suspicion, he said.
"In October 2010, Srikant, arrested two days ago, took a house on rent in Shastri Nagar area in Meerut and started operating his activities from there," the SDGP said.
Later, they were joined by Rakesh, aged 38, and his wife Rashmi, he said.
During raids on the house today, hard computer disks, CDs, digital voice recorder and printed Maoist literature were seized, the SDGP said.
No arrests had been made as the occupants had left the house, he said.
Brij Lal said the house was owned by Avinash Kumar Nigam, an employee of UP State Road Transport Corporation. "The owner did not get the police verification of the tenants done," the SDGP said.
