Lucknow: A Maoist surrendered before the police in Uttar Pradesh in Mirzapur district on Thursday, an official said.

Vinod Kharwar, 40, a native of Bihar`s Kaimur district, surrendered following a combing operation by police in a forest area. He operated in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, police said.

"Vinod operated in Bihar and regions of Sonbhadra and Mirzapur districts of Uttar Pradesh. Around 16 criminal cases were pending against him in various police stations," Superintendent of Police K Satyanarayan told reporters in Mirzapur, some 300 km from Lucknow.
According to police, Kharwar also deposited a rifle, two hand grenades and several cartridges with the police.
