responsible for "rising cases of atrocities" against Dalits,
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has shot off a letter to
President Pratibha Patil demanding dismissal of the
The BSP supremo claimed that several Dalits were denied
voting rights in the recent Panchayat elections in Haryana.
She also charged that 40 members of the community were injured
in violence during the polls.
"It is sad that even after 62 years of independence, the
Haryana government is not able to ensure voting rights to
Dalits and so it has no right to continue in power," an
official release quoting the chief minister said.
Referring to another case in Hissar district of Haryana
where 30 houses of lower castes were allegedly set ablaze, she
said people especially those belonging to Balmiki caste were
forced to flee from their homes.
"The situation is so bad in Haryana that the apex court
had to intervene for ensuring security of Dalits," she said,
adding she has written a letter to the president demanding
dismissal of the government which had "failed to ensure
constitutional rights of Dalits and provide them adequate
Mayawati also attacked Rahul Gandhi for visiting Dalit
houses during his trips to Uttar Pradesh.
Without naming the Congress general secretary, she
alleged that the Congress party had been indulging in such
drama and the condition of Dalits in states ruled by Congress
and other parties was pathetic.
