Mayawati seeks ban on SC people rolling on used food plates

UP CM Mayawati demanded an immediate ban on an alleged practice in K`taka in which scheduled caste people roll on used food plates made of leaves to cure skin diseases, terming the custom as inhuman and insulting.

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister
Mayawati on Saturday demanded an immediate ban on an alleged
practice in Karnataka in which scheduled caste people roll on
used food plates made of leaves to cure skin diseases, terming
the custom as inhuman and insulting.

Continuing with this tradition for the treatment of skin
diseases is inhuman, humiliating and derogatory, Mayawati said
in a statement here and demanded that a ban be imposed on the
`scurrilous` tradition forthwith.

Mayawati issued the statement in reaction to a private TV
news channel showing people belonging to the SCs rolling on
used food plates made of leaves outside a temple in Karnataka.

Noting that the custom went against the right to equality
enshrined in the Constitution, she said casteist elements
were playing with the dignity of Scheduled Caste people.
