New Delhi: Launching a scathing attack on Mulayam Singh Yadav over his alleged sensational claim that former president Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma was aware of the fact that Babri Masjid would be demolished on December 06, 1992, former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Kalyan Singh on Friday said the Samajwadi Party supremo is shedding crocodile tears to appease the Muslim vote bank.

The BJP leader said Mulayam`s claim is absolutely incorrect, and added that he is telling a lie.

"Even if it is correct that Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma told him that the Babri Masjid would be razed on December 06, 1992, why didn`t he tell about this to the then Prime Minister of the country? Why didn`t he give this information to the then Home Minister of the country? I was the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh then if he did not want to tell about this to me he would have given this information to the Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary, who is the topmost administrative officer. Why didn`t he give this information to the Governor?" asked Singh.

"So, should I consider that Mulayam Singhji wanted the structure to be demolished? Mulayam is shedding crocodile tears and he is trying to appease the Muslims," he added.

Singh also used the occasion to target the other political outfits ahead of the forthcoming Lok Sabha Elections.

"This is absolutely correct that Mulayam is trying to consolidate the Muslim vote bank. As of now, Narendra Modi is the most powerful and popular leader. Be it the Samajwadi Party, BSP, Congress or the left parties, all of them are afraid of Narendra Modi`s name. And you might have noticed that the leaders of almost all the political parties are after Modi," said Singh.

"A Narendra Modi wave is sweeping Uttar Pradesh and the BJP`s wave will be imminent throughout the country because of Narendra Modi," he added.

Kalyan Singh further expressed confidence that the BJP-led NDA will form the government at the Centre after the next Lok Sabha polls.

"Even the common man wants to get rid of the Congress. The Common man wants to get rid of corrupt. So, the message of corruption free India and Congress free India is being accepted by the people, including those residing in the villages. Even in Uttar Pradesh, the results will be astonishing and in favour of the BJP," he said.

In a sensational claim, Mulayam Singh Yadav alleged earlier on Monday that the then president Shankar Dayal Sharma was aware of the fact that Babri Masjid would be demolished on December 06, 1992.

Addressing a public function, Mulayam said that they had conveyed the plan to the then president, when he along with his party men had met him to seek his intervention in stopping the impending act.

"On December 4, 1992, there was a meeting held to discuss the situation after the decision to demolish the masjid in Ayodhya was taken by BJP and its supporters. It was decided to see the President and seek his intervention. Shankar Dayal Sharma was the president then," Yadav said.

"We gave him a letter. We told him the masjid would be brought down. Shankar Dayal Sharma read the letter and discussed with us. He looked around here and there and then he told us that hope you will not tell anyone. Then he said the masjid will certainly be brought down. Shankar Dayal Sharma said this," Yadav added.

He said he tried a lot to talk to the government at the time, but no one listened and on December 6, 1992, the mosque was razed.

Shankar Dayal Sharma was the ninth president of India and served from 1992 to 1997. He passed away in 1999.

The Babri Masjid Mosque was demolished on December 6, 1992. The demolition of the 16th century Babri Mosque had triggered widespread religious riots across the country.
