Lucknow: There is a need to change the mentality of society towards leprosy patients and people be made aware that this disease is fully curable, Governor Ram Naik on Wednesday said.
He said that he would talk to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav for the patients' rehabilitation and pension facility.
"There is a need to change the mentality of society towards leprosy patients and people be made aware that this disease is fully curable with the help of proper treatment", Naik said during his meeting with a delegation of Nippon Foundation led by Yohei Sasakawa here.
There are 800 leper colonies in the country which were set up outside the cities but as the population has grown these colonies have come under the urban areas, the governor said.
There was a need to set up new colonies for their rehabilitation elsewhere and they need not be disturbed till the new colonies are not equipped with basic amenities.
