NHRC seeks report from UP on custodial beating

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Thursday issued notice to Uttar Pradesh government seeking a report on the alleged beating of two persons in police custody resulting in the death of one.

Commission (NHRC) on Thursday issued notice to Uttar Pradesh
government seeking a report on the alleged beating of two
persons in police custody resulting in the death of one.

The notices have been issued to District Magistrate and
Superintendent of Police of Sitapur district asking for a
report on the allegations of "merciless" beating of two
persons in custody causing the death of one and serious
injuries to the other on the March 13.

"They have been directed to take appropriate action with
regard to the investigation of the case as per the extant
guidelines of the Commission and send within eight weeks the
inquest report, magisterial inquiry report, post-mortem report
along with the report of independent investigation report.

"The Commission has also asked the Superintendent of
Police to explain as to why he did not inform the Commission
about the death in police action within 24 hours as per the
NHRC guidelines," an NHRC statement said.
