Pradesh Police to file a response within four weeks on reports that a man was beaten to death in police custody in Moradabad.
The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu
cognizance of a media report of March 4 that policemen picked
up 55-year-old Saleem, a resident of Makbara Hazira, from his
house and severely beat him up at Galshaheed police station in
Saleem died immediately after being released, the rights
panel noted citing the press report. It said that as per the
report, the deceased was picked up by police for interrogation
since his son was accused of purchasing a stolen mobile phone.
"The contents of the press report, if true, raises
serious issues of violation of human rights of the deceased,
who was not involved in any criminal activity," the Commission
said, according to official sources.
It asked the Director General of Police, UP and Senior
Superintendent of Police, Moradabad, to submit a report in the
matter within four weeks, the sources said.
The district police has already ordered a probe and
suspended a head constable in connection with the incident
that sparked tension in various parts of the city.
