Kanpur: Two days after an engineering student alleged that he was ragged by his seniors, the district administration here has decided to conduct random night raids at college hostels and establish a round-the-clock control room for registering complaints.

The teams for the night raids will include Additional City Magistrate and circle police officers and students caught ragging will be immediately arrested, District Magistrate Mukesh Meshram said.

"The district administration will take the incidents of ragging very seriously," he said.

A round-the-clock control room with a toll free number has also been set up for the students to complain against any such instances.

On August 29, Pranshu Singh (20), a student of B.Tech Computer Science in PSIT Engineering College here, alleged that he was ragged and threatened by his seniors in the hostel, a charge which was denied by the college.

An FIR on the charge of attempt to murder (Section 307 of IPC) and under other relevant sections of UP Prohibition of Ragging in Educational Institutions Act has been lodged against the unidentified persons.

However, no arrests have been made so far and an Additional City Magistrate level administrative investigation is underway.
