Lucknow: A local court here has issued a
non-bailable warrant against Shia cleric Maulana Kalbe Jawwad after he failed to appear in the court in a land grabbing case.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Kanshi Nath
yesterday issued the warrant against Jawwad, who is the
Imam-e-Juma of the Asafi Mosque and a member of the All-India
Muslim Personal Law Board, in a five-year-old land grabbing
case, in which he himself was a complainant.

In October 2005, Jawwad lodged an FIR at Talkatora
police station alleging that some persons were trying to grab
Waqf land.
Later, police filed a charge-sheet against an accused
named Lalu Yadav in the court, but Jawwad failed to appear
before the court to record his statement.

The court had also issued a warrant against the cleric
in April.
On Sunday, the Shia cleric was detained as a preventive
measure during a demonstration against alleged irregularities
in a college in Hassanganj area, triggering violent protests
by his supporters who indulged in arson and vandalism.

Jawwad was later released.
