New Delhi: A woman lost her life while several others were injured as a stampede broke out during Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's birthday celebrations in Badaun on Saturday.

A crowd that had gathered during Samajwadi Party MP Dharmendra Yadav's program to distribute blankets went out of control and several people were trampled upon in the melee.

Badaun`s Superintendent of Police Balendu Bhushan however said that the woman passed away because of a heart attack and not due to the stampede.

Expressing his dismay over the incident, state BJP president Laxmikant Bajpai said that proper security arrangements should have been made at the event.

A mega two-day birthday bash for Yadav was organised by SP across Uttar Pradesh. Grandest of the bashes that took place in Rampur triggered a controversy.

During the celebrations, Yadav rode an imported Victorian-style 'buggy' (horse-driven carriage) and around 40 ministers gathered for his bash.

Thousands of Azam's supporters accompanied the 'buggy' carrying Mulayam, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and minister Azam Khan, as it proceeded towards the Jauhar University where the SP chief celebrated his birthday.

When questioned about the funding for the grand event, an irate Khan had said sarcastically that the money has come from Taliban, a terror group, and underworld dons - Dawood Ibrahim and Abu Salem.
