Lucknow: Over 300 Samajwadi Party activists,
were on Thursday arrested during the one-day `Virodh Diwas`
agitation by launched the outfit to protest against alleged
police atrocities on its workers during the party`s recent
three-day anti-government stir.

Amidst report of clashes between SP workers and leaders
at some places the protest was by and large peaceful,
officials said.

Special Additional General of Police Brij Lal said in the
wake of `Virodh Diwas` agitation tight security arrangements
were made and there was complete normalcy across the state.

"As a preventive measure 317 SP workers and leaders,
including an MP and six MLAs, were arrested and police did not
used force anywhere. Schools, colleges, markets and offices
remained opened and there was no report of any untoward
incident," he told reporters.

Claiming that the agitation was successful SP state
president Akhilesh Yadav said people participated on their own
and over one lakh effigies of the Chief Minister were burned
across the state.

He alleged that party workers were lathicharged by police
at a number of places and thousands of them were arrested.

Earlier in the day SP alleged that Akhilesh and several
other leaders have been put under "house arrest" and party
workers were tortured to prevent them from leading the one-day
protest against the BSP government.

"The state government is functioning in an autocratic
manner. It is not even allowing me to reach the party office,"
Akhilesh told reporters outside his residence.

The SP had announced a village-level protest to press for
ouster of the "corrupt" BSP government in the state.

"It`s a breach of my privilege and I will write to Lok
Sabha Speaker about it. I have not been allowed to attend
Parliament," Yadav said.

SP MP Sushila Saroj was also been put under house arrest
at her residence at Indira Nagar, party alleged.

However, SDG Brij Lal refuted the claims and allegation
of Akhilesh and said no SP leader was put under house arrest.
