Lucknow: In a bizarre incident, a panchayat in Uttar Pradesh's Hapur district ordered swapping of wives after one of the married woman eloped with the husband of another woman from the same village, said reports on Friday.

Initially, the husband had approached the police to register a complaint about his missing wife, the officials, however, refused to take up the case.

He later went to the panchayat, which ordered the swapping of wife.

The panchayat also ordered to pay Rs 10000 to the woman, whose husband had run away with the spouse of another person.

Confirming the incident, the man whose wife had eloped, said that the panchayat asked him to keep the another person's wife as he eloped with his wife.

UP has always remained in news for such bizarre panchayat diktats.

Earlier this month, a community panchayat banned girls from wearing jeans and keeping mobile phones claiming that they were having a "bad" effect on them and were responsible for eve-teasing incidents.

Few days ago, another incident had come to the fore, when a panchayat in UP's Bijnore district asked the family of a rape victim not to register a police complaint and instead slap the accused.
