Lucknow: Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Saturday met the people injured in Rae Bareli train mishap at King George's Medical University (KGMU) trauma centre here and said the Railways should provide adequate assistance to the victims "at the earliest".

"We have deep sympathies for those who have lost their relatives. I pray for the fast recovery of the injured.

"I expect that the Railway Ministry will provide adequate assistance to the victims at the earliest," Gandhi, who represents Rae Bareli in Lok Sabha, told reporters after meeting the victims.

38 people were killed and over 150 others injured when Dehradun-Varanasi Janata Express jumped the rails at Bachhrawan station near Rae Bareli, 50 km from here, yesterday.

37 of the injured are undergoing treatment at KGMU Hospital, where Gandhi spent around 20 minutes interacting with the injured.

The Congress president also appreciated the efforts of the doctors. UP Pradesh Congress chief Nirmal Khatri and former state unit chief and MLA Rita Joshi were also with her.

Joshi said that majority of those killed or injured in the accident were from Rae Bareli or Amethi -- the Lok Sabha constituencies of Sonia and her son Rahul.
