Two Russian women were on Monday detained for interrogation for allegedly filming the riverfront at Dashashwamedh ghat here without obtaining permission from the authorities concerned, police said.

Varanasi: Two Russian women were on Monday detained for interrogation for allegedly filming the riverfront at Dashashwamedh ghat here without obtaining permission from the authorities concerned, police said.

The two women, identified as Alexandra and Marie - both in their 30's, claimed that they were professional photographers. They were held and interrogated by Intelligence Bureau, local intelligence unit (LIU) sleuths and police for filming the riverfront of the ghats with the help of a campcopter without taking prior permission from the district authorities, said DP Shukla, Circle Officer of Dashashwamedh area.

However, no suspicious items were recovered from their possession and they recorded no objectionable content, said Shukla.

The duo were staying in a guest house at Lalita Ghat and were carrying all the valid documents. They had flew to New Delhi from Russia on January 8 for a 20-day tour of India, he said.

The questioning revealed that they were unaware about the laws regarding the use of camcopter in Varanasi, Shukla said, adding that the use of the device is strictly prohibited near Kashi Vishwanath temple area.

They are currently being interrogated, he said.
