Allahabad: A security guard was killed and property worth lakhs of rupees was gutted in a major fire that broke out in a bank here early on Monday, an official said.

The fire broke out in a branch of the State Bank of Patiala in Bahadurganj area. Eight fire tenders were pressed into service.

"The security guard of the bank died before we could reach the spot. After several hours of operation, we were able to control the blaze that destroyed a major portion of the bank. No other person was injured in the incident," Chief Fire Officer (CFO) Satish Singh said here, some 200 km from Lucknow.

"While equipment like printers, computers and official documents were destroyed, we prevented the blaze from spreading to the bank`s lockers and nearby commercial establishments," he added.
According to officials, the financial loss caused by the fire is to be ascertained. A short-circuit in electric supply is believed to have triggered the fire.
