Sitapur: Seven policemen engaged in rescuing accident victims on a national highway in the district were among eight persons killed o Tuesday after being
mowed down by a truck.
An accident had taken place in the Ataria area on the highway and these policemen had rushed to save the accident victims when a truck coming from the opposite direction lost control and rammed into them in the wee hours, police said.
Six policemen, including station officer, Panna Lal Saroj, sub-inspector Prem Narain Misra, three constables Ravi Tiwari, Ram Kumar Rawat, Rajnath and a homeguard Awdesh Gupta were killed on the spot.
Three persons were referred to trauma centre in Lucknow where a peon and police personnel died during treatment. The truck driver was also killed in the accident,
Additional Superintendent of Police, North, Balendu Bhushan Singh said.
