Ghaziabad: Family members of the army jawan, killed in an encounter in Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr district, today strongly protested the police action and demanded a CBI probe into it claiming that it was a case of mistaken identity.

The 23-year-old jawan's father today alleged before the media that police mistook Deepak, a Rajputana Rifles soldier, for Vinod Fauzi, a criminal carrying a reward of Rs 50,000 and killed him.

Demanding a CBI probe into the encounter Deepak's father also asked the Chief of Army Staff General V K Singh to intervene in the matter.

However, SSP Bulandshahr Nilesh Kumar said the encounter was not fake in any manner and expressed readiness to face any inquiry.

Earlier, UP police had said that the army jawan was killed in a shootout on Saturday which followed when he along with an accomplice allegedly seized a private car after throwing out its driver from the moving vehicle and fired at police personnel when they tried to intercept the vehicle.

Deepak' relatives in Bulandshahr also claimed that his friend Gaurav, who was with him at the time of the encounter and escaped later, had not yet returned home as he was afraid of police.

They said the army jawan had come home on a one-month leave to attend his sister's wedding.
