SP demands fresh panchayat polls in UP

Alleging irregularities by ruling BSP in panchayat elections SP demanded for fresh polls.

Lucknow: Alleging irregularities by ruling BSP in panchayat elections, the Samajwadi Party on Tuesday demanded that Governor BL Joshi should order fresh polls in the state.

A delegation of SP leaders including national general secretary Ashok Bajpai, Opposition leaders in the state Assembly Shivpal Singh Yadav and Ahmad Hasan met the Governor and submitted a memorandum in this regard.
"In the name of unopposed election, BSP looted posts of district chairmen, therefore the process should be cancelled and fresh polls should be conducted," the delegation demanded.

"Those members of district panchayats who voted against BSP candidates in polls are being implicated in false cases," Leader of Opposition Shivpal told reporters.

"Over Rs 1000 crore of development had been misused in the polls and was used for horse trading. We have come to lodge a complaint with the Governor on this," Yadav said.
The party alleged that barring a few districts, most of the district magistrates and SPs acted as agents of the BSP, therefore an inquiry should be conducted against them and action be taken.
