Lucknow: Surprise inspections were on Sunday conducted at various jails of Uttar Pradesh by the concerned district magistrates and police chiefs to ensure that prohibited items are not being used by inmates and proper facilities provided to them.

"In a surprise inspection at a jail here, prohibited items like lighters, gutkha, etc were found in the bags of inmates, after which wardens of the concerned barracks were issued show cause notice," District Magistrate, Rajshekhar said.

Strict instructions have been issued to check visitors, prison staff and inmates coming back from court hearings so that prohibited items do not enter the jail premises, he said.
