Unnao/Kannauj: In a robbery attempt which appears straight out of the script of a Bollywood film, three persons posing as sales tax officers allegedly looted a couple of jewellers of valuables and cash worth lakhs of rupees this morning before they were later apprehended by police.

According to police, the Mathura-based jewellers were on their way back from Lucknow in their car along with their driver when they were intercepted by the trio in another vehicle near Unnao.

Introducing themselves as sales tax officers, the trio boarded the jewellers' vehicle saying they wanted to carry out an inspection.

Thereafter, they attacked the two jewellers and their driver inside the car and, after throwing them out in the Bangarmau area of Unnao, fled with the vehicle and the valuables which were inside it.

But the three accused were later nabbed by police from the adjoining Kannauj district. They have been identified as Manvendra and Tarun Pandit, both hailing from Mathura, and Rajesh Kapoor of Agra.

Cash worth Rs 19 lakh, 4.4-kg gold and a pistol were recovered from their possession, police said, adding that the jewellers' vehicle, a Toyota Innova, was later found burnt and abandoned.

The injured victims of the robbery attempt have been admitted to hospital, police said.
