Mathura: Two highway robbers, fleeing in a truck which they had forcibly seized, were killed today in a shootout with police near the Haryana border here.

The two were members of a gang which was involved in a number of highway robberies, Uttar Pradesh Additional Director General of Police Brij Lal told reporters in Lucknow.

One of the killed was identified as Naseem alias Bheda, a native of Haryana, he said adding the gang used to target trucks and canters on the highways.

Three persons forcibly seized a truck, coming from Bharatpur in Rajasthan, on the Mathura highway and held its conductor captive.

They later threw the conductor out of the moving vehicle and sped towards Haryana, Lal said.

When police tried to intercept their truck at Kosi Kalan near the Haryana border in the wee hours, they fired at the security personnel, the ADGP said.

In the ensuing shootout, the two were killed, he said adding the third managed to escape.

Two country-made pistols with several cartridges were recovered from the scene, SP (Rural) Radhey Mohan Bharadwaj said.
