Unnao rape victim dies after sixteen days

16-year-old Poonam, who was raped in Kanskheda village in the district 16 days ago, has died at Lucknow medical college, police said.

Kanpur: 16-year-old Poonam, who was raped
in Kanskheda village in the district 16 days ago, has died at
Lucknow medical college, police said on Friday.

The minor died yesterday at the hospital, they said.
"Condition of Poonam was "stable" when she was sent to
Lucknow for a surgery on February 21," Principal of GSVM
Medical College Dr Anand Swaroop said.

"I am not aware of the reasons behind her death. If
any probe has to be conducted in Poonam`s death then the
doctors attending her there could do so," he said.

The doctors who treated the sixteen-year-old at GSVM
Medical College here reffered her to the King George Medical
University hospital in Lucknow since the medical college did
not have the necessary facilities to treat her injuries.

Swaroop said the victim`s relatives had to shift her
in the King George hospital in Lucknow as they could not admit
her in Sanjay Gandhi Post-Graduate Institute of Medical
Sciences for "unknown" reasons.

Poonam was admitted in GSVM medical college on Feb 8
with serious injuries on her neck and jaw.

She was operated upon for gashes on her neck and jaw.

However, we had to refer her to Lucknow due to `internal
blood clotting`, said the Principal of GSVM medical college.

Poonam was raped and attacked with a sharp weapon by
Ram Sevak in Kansakheda village in Unnao district on February
7.
